happy easter !
24th Apr, 2011

Wow what wonderful weather we have had for the Easter Period, it has certainly been a bonus for most of lambing time which is now nearing the end ( .... did you follow lambing live ? if so you would have seen the rough weather cumbria did have for a few days !) and calving is going well and this weekend visitors to Gill Head  we lucky enough to be able witness the birth of our newest arrival and I hear they have christened her Daisy ! (see pic)

The farmhouse B&B has been busy, however there  are some date/rooms available next week,  so if looking for a last minute getaway  give us a call and beat the 'wedding weekend' rush !.....   The same applies to the caravan and campsite, there are pitches available next week and limited pitches for 'The' weekend, do phone to check availability....the countryfile forecast gave a dry week !

We look forward to welcoming guests, old and new, to Gill Head Farm.

The One Show comes to Ullswater
13th Apr, 2011

The BBC's One Show chose Ullswater for it's location for a feature on Spring in the Lake District last week with wildlife photographer and presenter Jamie Crawford.  Our freinds at REACH BEYOND ADVENTURE organised the locations and support and took them ghyll climbing, wildcamped on the high fells and helped them to capture some spectacular images of the lake disrtict in springtime. During the filming they came to visit Fiona (my sister and partner in Gill Head's Farm business)  who took them to her fields at Matterdale the help capture scenes of  newborn lambs etc.   The programme will be aired this Friday at 7pm......don't miss it !!

Spring again !
8th Mar, 2011

Gosh it doesn't seem 5 mins since last spring news !  March arrived at Gill Head like a lamb, with calm spring like weather, and we hope it stays that way, ......

We are due to start lambing any day and with almost 1,000 sheep to lamb and the cows calving too there a good many long days and nights on the  way  !

We can still see pockets of snow on the fell tops and the forecast is for wintry showers this weekend so I'm not 'casting any clowts'  yet !....as the saying goes.  However  thoughts do turn to warmer days and now is a good time to book that short break or longer ........ Our camping pods are proving a popular choice, offering camping with comfort but without the hassle of the tent... why not buy a camping pod gift voucher as a treat with a difference for someone ?  ......Mothers day is coming up  soon.     The farmhouse B&B is fully open again after the winter and offers great  4* accommodation  our wholesome breakfasts will set you up for a great day exploring  the fells and lakes and why not order one of our evening meal options all are made using local produce, freshly prepared and delivered to the guests kitchen ready to enjoy at your leisure by one of the crackling wood fires...just remember to get the wine on your way home .

Our special Offer this March : Book a midweek 3 night spring  break in the farmhouse and receive a complimentary light supper tray for two on the night of your choice. Quote Ref : MARCH BREAK.

Safely gathered in!
30th Jun, 2010
The great weather we have had recently has meant that we were able to make some good silage to feed to the stock through the winter, and today, the last of it was gathered in... with a sigh of relief  (it can be a tense time of weather watching and praying the machinery won't breakdown at a crucial moment !!) The next  big job on the never ending list for the stock, is to get the sheep clipped (another weather dependant job !)

It's great weather for camping, so get in the loft or garage and get your camping gear sorted out ! It's not too busy yet as the schools haven't finshed and I must say, the fells and lakes are looking spectacular.  Camping PODS are booking up quickly now so don't miss out on your dates if you were thinking of trying one out , the B&B has a couple of quiet  dates in July and I will be posting some special offers on here soon for those .. so watch this space ! ( or follow us on facebook etc)

Spring at Gillhead Farm
1st Jun, 2010
Spring arrived with half term and brought with it great weather & lots of visitors to Gill Head, all our New PODS were full for the week and feedback was encouraging with some making repeat bookings for later in summer.
FARM NEWS; Our sheep finished lambing some weeks back and the cattle are all turned out to the summer pastures with the bulls Keith & Ronnie for some 'summer lovin'! So farm work is concentrated on general husbandry.

Our sheepdog pups, born March have all been found good homes and we are starting basic trianing on Jess and Floss the two we kept. The recent rain has got the grass growing again so pastures are shut off to prepare for silage making later in summer.
